Which ink/toner does the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw use?

The Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw adds copying, scanning and fax to the M255dw, on the same four toner colour engine.

Before you buy toner, check which number your machine wants. HP sells this printer with 206A and 206X cartridges in North America and 207A and 207X in Europe and Asia, and the prices are not identical: 206A black comes to 5.56c a page and 207A black to 5.33c. The high yield versions land at 4.13c and 4.29c. Colours sit around 6.00c a page at the standard size, so a page with all four on it costs several times what plain text does.

The dynamic security notice appears in the summary specifications on HP's store listing for this model. In HP's words the printer is intended to work only with cartridges that have a new or reused HP chip, and firmware updates will keep those measures effective and block cartridges that previously worked.

That same sentence leaves one door ajar, and it is worth reading closely: HP says a reused HP chip enables the use of reused, remanufactured and refilled cartridges. A remanufactured cartridge built on a genuine HP chip therefore stands in a different position from a new compatible built on a cloned one. On a four toner machine, where a single refused colour stops the whole printer, that distinction is usually worth paying for.
