Which ink does the HP ENVY 6455e use?

The ENVY 6455e and the ENVY Pro 6455e are the same printer under two names, and they take the same cartridges. Worth knowing before you order, because both spellings sit side by side in most listings. It is also an inkjet, so the toner searches that land on this page have nothing to buy here.

The cartridges are the HP 67 family: HP 67 black and HP 67 tri-color at the standard size, HP 67XL black and HP 67XL tri-color at high yield. The number is on the label inside the cartridge door, and that label is worth trusting over the name on the box.

The XL saves on both slots here, by about the same amount. The 67XL black is rated 240 pages for $35.99, which is 15.00c a page, while the standard 67 black is 120 pages for $22.99, or 19.16c, so the larger cartridge takes about 22 percent off and halves the number of cartridge changes. On colour it is 18.50c against 23.99c, roughly 23 percent. A standard pair costs $46.98 and a high yield pair $72.98.

The yields are the part to sit with. A standard 67 black is rated at 120 pages, so a single ream of paper outlives four of them. On most printers the answer to that would be a compatible cartridge at a third of the price, and this one does not allow it.

The 6455e ships enrolled in HP+, and HP+ uses Dynamic Security to require original HP cartridges for the life of the printer. That is not a setting you turn off later. It is accepted during setup and is effectively permanent once completed, so on an enrolled machine a compatible HP 67 is refused outright rather than intermittently, and genuine HP 67 and HP 67XL are the only safe buy. A rejected cartridge on an HP+ printer has a recognisable shape. A contact fault reads as missing, not detected or incompatible, comes and goes, and clears after you wipe the copper strip with a dry cloth, reseat the cartridge and leave the printer unplugged for a minute. An enrolment block appears the moment the cartridge goes in and never clears. There is also a false alarm peculiar to these models: HP+ has to reach HP servers to activate, so a weak connection during setup can surface as a cartridge problem when the cartridge is fine. If colour looks washed out, run a nozzle check before replacing anything, because a partly clogged head wastes ink that is still in the cartridge.
