HP 67XL black · XL

The HP 67XL is the high-yield black cartridge in HP's 67 range, used across a wide spread of DeskJet and ENVY all-in-ones. Eight printers in our database take it, including the DeskJet 2755e and 4155e and the ENVY 6055e and 6455e. It is rated at about 240 pages, and at a list price of $35.99 that is 15.00c per page, which is steep. Buying the standard 67 instead makes it worse again, 19.16c, so the XL is about 22 percent cheaper for every page. The 67 family is still one of HP's pricier lines to run: most of the plain standard cartridges we price across every brand cost less per page than this high yield one does.

Most of these printers are on our firmware-lockout list. They shipped with HP Dynamic Security, so a compatible 67XL that works today can be rejected after a printer firmware update. If you want to save money with third-party ink here, buy from a seller that guarantees current-firmware compatibility and turn off automatic updates.

If a genuine 67XL is not recognized, pull it, remove the tape over the contacts, wipe the copper pads with a dry lint-free cloth, and reseat until it clicks. Many ENVY and DeskJet models expect the cartridge to seat with a firm push and an audible click, and a loose seat is the usual cause of a cartridge missing message. A power cycle with the printer unplugged for a minute clears most of the rest.
