Which ink does the HP OfficeJet Pro 8020 use?

The HP OfficeJet Pro 8020 uses the HP 910 and 910XL cartridge family: the standard HP 910 in black, cyan, magenta and yellow, and the high-yield HP 910XL in the same four colors. The XL versions are the ones to buy if the printer sees regular use.

High-yield ink drops the running cost sharply here. The HP 910XL black is rated at about 825 pages for around $45, roughly 5.5 cents per page, against about 8.3 cents for the standard HP 910 black at about 300 pages for $25. The color saving is larger: each HP 910XL color prints about 825 pages for around $19, about 2.3 cents per page, where the standard 910 colors sit nearer 4.4 cents. A full set of XL cartridges is the clear choice for an office machine.

The 8020 is a 2019 model with HP Dynamic Security, so a firmware update can block non-HP chips. Compatible HP 910 cartridges may work today and be rejected after an update, so if you use them, buy from a seller with a return policy and think about declining automatic firmware updates. If a cartridge is not recognized, tell a contact problem apart from a firmware block. Reseat the cartridge, wipe the gold contacts with a dry lint-free cloth, confirm the tape is gone, and power the printer off and unplug it for a minute to clear a seating error. A message that the cartridge is blocked or that a non-HP chip is not authorized points to the firmware instead, and cleaning the contacts will not help. For banded output, run the printhead cleaning cycle before replacing a cartridge with ink left.
