Which ink/toner does the Brother MFC-L2710DW use?

The Brother MFC-L2710DW is a mono laser all-in-one, so instead of ink it uses a black toner cartridge plus a separate drum unit. The toner comes in two sizes, the standard Brother TN-730 and the high-yield Brother TN-760, and the DR-730 drum is a longer-life part rated at about 12000 pages that you replace far less often than the toner.

On cost per page the high-yield toner is the obvious buy. The Brother TN-760 is rated at about 3000 pages, which works out to about 2.8 cents per page, while the standard TN-730 is rated at about 1200 pages, or about 4.6 cents per page. Because a laser cartridge lasts thousands of pages, the TN-760 is the better value for anything more than very occasional printing, and the drum cost is spread across many toner changes rather than paid each time.

The MFC-L2710DW has no firmware lockout on record, and Brother does not use ink or toner DRM, so compatible and remanufactured TN-730 and TN-760 cartridges work and using them does not void your warranty. Third-party toner is where the savings are on a mono laser like this, and reputable compatibles are widely available. If the printer shows a low-toner warning too early, that is the page counter rather than an actual empty cartridge.

Two Brother-specific quirks are worth knowing. The toner-life counter is estimated from a page count, not from measuring toner, so it can report empty while usable toner remains; many of these models let you continue printing or reset the counter through the menu. Faded print or repeating marks down the page usually point to the drum rather than the toner, so try gently rocking the toner side to side to redistribute it first, and only if that does not help look at replacing the DR-730 drum. Always power the printer off at the button before removing the toner and drum assembly.
