Which ink/toner does the Brother HL-L2395DW use?

The Brother HL-L2395DW is a mono laser that takes the TN-730 toner or the higher yield TN-760, plus a DR-730 drum unit that is bought separately. The toner and the drum are two different consumables with two different lifespans, which is the part that catches out anyone coming from an inkjet.

On toner the choice is straightforward. The TN-730 is rated at 1200 pages and lists near $54.99, about 4.58 cents a page. The TN-760 is rated at 3000 pages for around $84.99, about 2.83 cents, so the larger cartridge is roughly 38 percent cheaper for every page and costs less than twice as much to buy. Unless you print almost nothing, the TN-760 is the one to order.

The DR-730 is rated at 12000 pages, so it outlives about 4 TN-760 cartridges before the printer starts asking for a new one. Brother counts drum life in pages rather than in toner, which is why a machine that prints one page at a time can reach the replace drum message with plenty of toner left. That message is a warning rather than a stop, and print quality usually degrades before the counter runs out. Grey backgrounds, or a mark that repeats at the same interval down every page, are drum symptoms rather than toner symptoms.

Brother does not lock this printer with firmware, so compatible and remanufactured TN-730 and TN-760 toners work, and the printer may show a non genuine notice that does not block printing. Two things are worth checking on a compatible: whether the seller includes a fresh chip, since the chip is what resets the page counter, and whether the drum is included, because it is not. If a new toner prints faded pages straight away, take it out and rock it gently end to end a few times to redistribute the powder, then reseat it in the drum frame until it clicks.
