Why is my printer printing blank pages? Find the cause and fix it one test tells you whether it is the ink, the printer, or your computer
A stack of blank pages feels like the printer has died, but it almost never has. Something in the chain from your document to the paper has broken, and the job is finding which link. Ink can be present but not reaching the page, a new cartridge can still have its seal on, a laser drum can be worn, or the computer can be sending an empty job while the printer sits there working fine. This guide starts with the single test that tells you which half of the problem you have, then walks the fix for each.
Start here: print the printer's own test page
Before you change a setting or open a cartridge, get the printer to print something with your computer out of the loop. Every printer can produce a self-test, status, or nozzle-check page straight from its own panel or buttons, and that page is the fork in the road.
- On a touchscreen model, look under Settings, Tools, or Maintenance for a nozzle check, print-quality report, or status page.
- On a button-only model, the report is usually a held-button combination at power-up. The exact sequence is in your manual under reports or maintenance.
- On an all-in-one, making a standalone copy does the same job, because it prints without the computer.
Read the result plainly. A blank or badly broken test page means the printer cannot get ink or toner onto paper, so work through the printer-side sections below. A clean test page means the hardware is fine and the blank output is coming from the computer, so skip to the driver and settings section.
Blank inkjet page: get the ink flowing again
If an inkjet's own test page is blank, ink is not reaching the paper. Take the likely causes in order, cheapest first.
- Tape or seal still on a new cartridge. Pull the cartridge and check for protective tape over the nozzles or contacts, and for small vent stickers. Remove them without touching the copper contacts or the nozzle plate, then reseat until it clicks.
- Cartridge not fully seated. A cartridge that looks installed can still sit proud of its contacts. Press each one home until it clicks and the carriage accepts it.
- Empty or near-empty supply. Check levels from the panel or app. A cartridge reading low can still print nothing if one colour or the black has actually run dry.
- Dried or clogged nozzles. This is the usual cause after a printer has sat unused for weeks. The ink in the nozzles has skinned over and blocked the flow. The fix is a printhead clean, covered next.
- Air in the line on a tank printer. EcoTank and other refillable-tank models can draw air into the tube after a refill or a long idle spell, which starves the head. Epson's fix is a head clean, and on some models an ink-charging cycle to prime the line again. Keep the tanks above the lower fill line so no more air is pulled in.
Clean the printhead without draining the tank
Head cleaning works, but each cycle spends ink, so the goal is the fewest cycles that clear the block. Run the built-in clean, not repeated deep cleans on faith.
- Load plain paper and run the standard clean printhead or clean cartridges routine from the panel or the maker's app.
- Print a nozzle check after each cycle and compare. If the pattern is filling back in, you are winning. HP suggests up to three cleaning cycles before you conclude the cartridge is the problem.
- Canon warns against running deep cleaning over and over without checking the nozzle pattern between attempts, because it burns ink fast. Do one, read the result, then decide.
- For a stubborn clog, power off and unplug, lift out the cartridge or removable head, and gently wipe the nozzle plate and contacts with a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water. Avoid alcohol and tap water. Let it dry, refit, and run one more clean.

Blank laser page: seal, drum, or empty toner
A laser has no liquid ink to clog, so a blank page points at the toner, the drum, or a part that moves toner onto the paper.
- Shipping seal still fitted. New toner and drum units ship with a strip of orange plastic and a pull tab that must come out before first use. Brother's own blank-page steps start by opening the front cover and checking for that orange packing material on the drum and toner assembly. Pull the toner out, remove any seal, and refit until it clicks.
- Blank started right after a new toner or drum. Brother's guidance is blunt here: if the pages went blank immediately after fitting a new toner cartridge or drum unit, the new part is the suspect and needs replacing. A faulty or mis-shipped unit does happen.
- Worn or dirty drum. A drum that can no longer hold a charge prints faint or blank. Brother documents a manual drum clean: take out the drum and toner assembly, clean the primary corona wire by sliding the green tab from side to side and returning it to the home position, then print ten to fifteen pages to clear residue and run the User Settings report to check. Repeat once if needed before replacing the drum.

- Transfer or fuser parts. If toner is present, the seal is off, and the drum is clean but pages stay blank, a transfer roller or belt that is not moving toner onto the paper is the next suspect, and that one is usually a service call.
Test page fine but documents blank: fix the computer side
If the printer's own report prints but your documents come out empty, the printer is healthy and the job is arriving wrong. Work through the software chain.
- Check the document itself. White text on a white background, a blank first page, or an image-only file with images turned off all print blank. Try a different file or a web page to rule this out.
- Confirm you picked the right printer. A job sent to a PDF writer, a disconnected wireless queue, or a stale copy of the printer puts nothing on paper. Remove duplicate printer entries and set the correct one as default.
- Check the print settings. The wrong paper type, wrong paper size, or a blank-page-between-documents option can produce empty sheets. HP's steps include confirming colour, paper type, size and quality are right for the job.
- Clear the queue and restart. A stuck job can send garbage or nothing at all. Cancel everything in the queue, power-cycle the printer, and try one page.
- Reinstall the driver. A corrupted driver is a common cause of blank output. Remove the printer, reinstall the maker's current driver or app, then add the printer back. HP lists this remove-and-readd, then reinstall sequence for exactly this symptom.
One extra blank page at the end of every job
A different problem from a wholly blank job is a single extra sheet that prints after every document. This one is almost always software, not ink.
- Update the printer firmware, which HP lists as the first fix for stray end-of-job pages.
- Remove the printer from your computer and add it back, then if it persists uninstall and reinstall the driver.
- Check the document for a trailing empty page or a stray paragraph that spills onto a second sheet, and check the print range in the app.
When it is genuinely the hardware
Most blank-page cases clear at the cartridge, head-clean, or driver stage. A few do not.
- An inkjet nozzle check that stays blank after three cleans and a fresh genuine cartridge points to a failed printhead. On printers with a cartridge-integrated head, a new cartridge is the head. On printers with a separate head, the head itself may need replacing.
- A laser that stays blank after the seal check, a drum clean, and a known-good toner usually has a drum or transfer fault.
- Weigh the repair against a new printer. Where a printhead or mainboard repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new model, replacement is usually the better call. If the printer is in warranty, contact the maker first.
Stop it happening again
Blank pages from dried ink are the easiest kind to prevent.
- Print something every week or two. A single page, colour or black, keeps ink moving through the nozzles and is the most effective habit against clogs.
- Only run head cleaning when you see a real quality problem, since routine cleaning wastes ink.
- Keep tank printers above the lower fill line, and store spare cartridges sealed and upright until you need them.

Why is my printer printing blank pages when it still has ink?
Ink in the cartridge is not the same as ink reaching the paper. Dried or clogged nozzles, a protective seal still on a new cartridge, a cartridge that is not fully seated, or air in a tank printer's line can all block flow while the level still reads full. Print a nozzle check, run one head-cleaning cycle, then check the pattern again.
How do I tell if it is the printer or my computer?
Print the printer's own self-test, status, or nozzle-check page from its front panel, or make a standalone copy on an all-in-one. If that comes out blank, the fault is in the printer. My new cartridge or toner prints blank. What did I miss?
Almost always a seal. Inkjet cartridges have tape over the nozzles and a vent sticker, and laser toner and drum units ship with an orange plastic strip and pull tab. Remove the cartridge, take off all packing material without touching the contacts or nozzles, and refit until it clicks. If it started the instant you fitted a new laser part, that part may be faulty and need replacing.
Is it safe to keep running deep cleaning until it works?
No. Each cleaning cycle spends ink, and repeated deep cleans can empty a cartridge quickly with nothing to show for it. Run one standard clean, print a nozzle check, and only continue if the pattern is improving. HP suggests a limit of about three cycles before treating the cartridge or head as the problem.
Why does my printer add a blank page after every document?
That is usually a firmware or driver quirk rather than an ink fault. Update the printer firmware, then remove and re-add the printer on your computer, and reinstall the driver if it continues. Also check the document for a trailing empty page.
