Reset a Brother toner counter after replacing or refilling toner clear Replace Toner and Toner Ended, and reset the drum too
Your Brother laser still says Replace Toner even though the cartridge is new or freshly refilled. That is normal for Brother mono lasers. Most of them estimate toner from a page count rather than reading how much powder is left, so the printer keeps its old count until you reset it by hand. The reset takes under a minute once you know the button sequence for your panel. The drum has its own separate counter, and that catches a lot of people out, so this covers both.
First work out what the printer is really asking for
Brother uses different messages for different parts, and they do not mean the same thing. Read yours before you touch anything.
Toner Low, Replace Toner and Toner Ended are about the TN toner cartridge, the part that holds the powder. These are the ones a counter reset clears when the toner is actually fine.
Replace Drum, Drum End Soon and Drum Stop are about the DR drum unit, the green imaging drum the toner clips into. That is a separate part with its own counter and its own reset, further down this page.
Cannot Detect Toner or No Toner is a different problem again. That is the printer failing to read the cartridge chip or the cartridge not being latched into the drum, so it is a seating and contact issue rather than a counter you can reset. There is a short section on that near the end.
The reason a brand new toner still nags you is simple. Brother mono lasers work out toner level from how many pages you have printed, not from the powder itself, so fitting a full cartridge does not on its own reset that page count. Genuine Brother toners carry a small mechanical actuator that trips the reset as the cover closes, which is why an official cartridge often clears by itself. Many refills and some compatibles do not trip it, so you run the reset manually.
Reset the toner counter, by panel type
Work out which of these three panels you have, then follow that one. After the reset, close the cover and print a test page to confirm the message has gone.
LED models with no screen, for example the HL-L2350DW and similar single-function lasers. Turn the printer on and open the front cover. Press and hold the Go button for about five seconds until the toner, drum and error lights all come on, then release. On some units a short series of Go presses then selects standard or high yield. Close the cover and the light should clear.
Small LCD with a keypad, for example the MFC-L2710DW and MFC-L2750DW family. Open the front cover and leave it open so the display shows the cover is open. Press and hold OK for about two seconds until the toner reset list appears. If OK only beeps, close the cover, reopen it, and press Clear or Back instead to bring up the list. Choose the entry that matches the cartridge you fitted, for a TN-760 high yield pick the high yield line and for a TN-730 pick the standard line, confirm with Yes, then close the cover.
Touchscreen models, for example the MFC-L3770CDW colour laser. With the printer on, open the top cover. On the touchscreen press and hold the Back arrow, or hold both Back and Cancel together for a few seconds on some models, until a hidden reset menu appears. Pick the colour and the yield that matches the cartridge you replaced. The screen shows Accepted when it takes. On a colour machine each colour has its own entry, so reset only the ones you changed.
If nothing on the panel brings up a list, the cause is usually the cartridge rather than the sequence. See the next section.
When the reset will not appear or will not stick
A few things stop the counter clearing even when you press the right keys.
A starter cartridge. The in-box toner that ships with a new printer often has no reset actuator at all, so there is no menu to trigger and no way to reset it. You have to fit a full retail or compatible TN cartridge before a reset will work.
The reset gear is not armed. Some compatible and refilled cartridges arrive with the small white reset gear on the end of the toner sitting in the used position. Take the toner out of the drum by pressing the green lock lever, find the gear on the end, turn it gently back to its home position, then refit and run the reset again.
Wrong yield selected. If you pick standard yield for a high yield cartridge, or the other way round, the count can be off and the warning returns early. Match the reset entry to the exact cartridge you fitted.
If you just want to keep printing while you sort this out, Brother has a built in override. On keypad models go to Menu, then General Setup, then Replace Toner, and set it to Continue. On touchscreen models go to Settings, then All Settings, then General Setup, then Replace Toner, and choose Continue. In Continue mode the printer keeps going past the toner warning until the print quality visibly drops.
Reset the drum counter, which is a separate job
The drum unit is the green frame the toner sits in, and it lasts through several toners before it needs replacing. It has its own counter, so a Replace Drum or Drum Stop message needs a drum reset, not a toner reset. Only do this when you have actually fitted a new drum, because resetting it early leaves the printer guessing at drum life. These are Brother's own documented procedures and the panel wording varies by model.
LED and keypad mono models, such as the HL-L2350DW and HL-L3230CDW families. Make sure the machine is on and the front cover is closed. Press OK and the Up arrow at the same time. Press OK to select Drum, then press the arrow key to reset the counter. On colour drum models you then pick the colour of the drum you replaced.
Touchscreen models, such as the MFC-L3780CDW. Press and hold the Toner icon for about five seconds, press Drum, choose the colour you replaced, and confirm with Yes. On larger office models the path is Settings, then All Settings, then Machine Info, then Parts Life, where you press and hold Drum until it asks you to confirm.
If a Drum Error or Drum! message appears rather than a replace prompt, that is often a dirty corona wire, not end of life. Slide the green tab on the drum from side to side a few times to clean the wire, refit the assembly, and see if it clears before you buy a new drum.
If it says Cannot Detect rather than Replace
A Cannot Detect Toner or No Toner message is not a counter you reset. The printer cannot read the cartridge, so the fix is mechanical. Open the cover, take the toner and drum assembly out, and unclip the toner from the drum. Check that the small chip contacts on the cartridge are clean and not covered by a stray bit of packing tape, then clip the toner firmly back into the drum until it clicks and refit the whole assembly. If a compatible cartridge is never detected on a printer that reads genuine Brother toner fine, the chip on that cartridge is the likely fault, and the seller should replace it.
This is not a firmware lock
A toner counter that needs resetting is easy to mistake for a printer blocking third-party supplies, but it is not the same thing. Brother stated in March 2025 that its firmware updates do not block the use of third-party ink or toner in its machines. The counter reset exists because Brother meters toner by page count, not to stop you using compatibles. Once you reset it, a compatible toner keeps printing.

The reset menu will not appear on my Brother printer. What now?
Two common causes. A starter cartridge, the one that ships in the box, often has no reset actuator, so there is no menu to bring up until you fit a full TN cartridge. Or the reset gear on a compatible cartridge is sitting in the used position, in which case remove the toner from the drum, turn the small white gear back to its home position, refit, and try again. To keep printing meanwhile, set Replace Toner to Continue in General Setup.
Does resetting the toner counter damage my Brother printer?
No. Resetting the toner counter after fitting a new or refilled cartridge is a normal step and does not harm the printer. The one thing to avoid is resetting the drum counter when you have not replaced the drum, because that leaves the machine unable to estimate drum wear correctly.
