W1340X is the high yield version of the same cartridge, sold as the 134X, and it fits the same three printers: the LaserJet M209dwe, the LaserJet MFP M234dwe and the LaserJet MFP M236dwe.

On cost it is not a close call. 5000 rated pages for $120.00 works out at 2.40c a page against 6.36c for the W1340A, about 62 percent less. One X cartridge costs $50.00 more than a standard one and prints more than four times as many pages. On printers where third party toner may not be an option at all, buying the larger size is the only saving actually available.

Whether third party toner is an option comes down to what happened during setup. These are HP+ machines, and an enrolled printer requires Original HP toner for its working life under HP's own programme terms, so a compatible W1340X gets refused. A machine set up without HP+ being accepted runs compatibles normally. If yours arrived already enrolled, there is no menu setting that undoes it, and a remanufactured cartridge built on a reused original HP chip is the route owners report working.

A refusal here has a recognisable shape. HP+ rejects a cartridge the moment it goes in and keeps rejecting it, which is different from the on and off behaviour of a dirty contact, and different again from a dynamic security block, which usually strikes a cartridge that has already been printing for weeks. Try one reseat with the contacts wiped. If the message survives that, and a known genuine cartridge prints fine, the enrolment is what you are looking at.
