W1340A is the standard black toner HP sells as the 134A. In our catalogue it fits three machines: the LaserJet M209dwe, the LaserJet MFP M234dwe and the LaserJet MFP M236dwe. Every one of them carries an e on the end of the model name, and that letter decides whether you are allowed to buy anything else.
The e means the printer was sold as an HP+ model. HP's own terms for the programme require an HP account, a permanent internet connection and Original HP toner for the life of the printer, and the store listing for the M209dwe puts it plainly: it works only with original HP toner. This is not a firmware update you can decline afterwards. It is a condition accepted at setup, and on an enrolled machine a compatible W1340A is refused outright rather than intermittently.
At 1100 rated pages for $70.00 the 134A prints at 6.36c a page. That is expensive for a mono laser, and about two and a half times what the same printing costs on the W1340X. If you are buying genuine anyway, the small cartridge is hard to justify beyond keeping one as a stopgap.
Check the number before you order. HP sells this cartridge under different marketing numbers by region, listing it as 134A on its United States store and as 135A on its European ones for the same printers, and its replacement guides caution that cartridges are for distribution and use within their designated region only and will not work outside it. A cheap cartridge bought from the wrong market can be genuine HP and still be rejected by the printer.
