On all three printers the PG-260 is half of a two cartridge set, working with a CL-261 tri-colour that costs more per page than it does. Running out of black is the cheaper of the two problems to have.
The PG-260 is a FINE cartridge with the print head built into it, so the copper plate on the underside is the business end. Streaks and gaps often come from dried ink sitting on that plate rather than from an empty cartridge, and blotting it gently on a slightly damp piece of kitchen paper, then letting it dry, fixes a fair share of them. Canon's instructions say not to touch the contacts or the nozzle plate with your fingers, and the reason is that the oils from a fingerprint sit exactly where the ink needs to come out.
