Which ink/toner does the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M1536dnf use?

The HP LaserJet Pro MFP M1536dnf takes one consumable, the CE278A black toner, sold as the HP 78A. There is no high yield version of it on our listing, so cartridge shopping for this printer is a question of who you buy from rather than which size to get.

At 2100 rated pages and a list price near $75, the genuine 78A works out at about 3.57 cents a page. That is high for a mono laser, and it is the main argument for buying third party toner on a machine of this age. Nothing stands in the way of doing so. The printer is not on our firmware lockout list and the 78A carries no enforcement chip, so compatible and remanufactured versions of it drop straight in.

The drum is built into the 78A cartridge rather than being a separate part, so there is no second consumable to track and no drum counter to reset. It also means that print defects which repeat at a fixed interval down the page leave the printer when the cartridge does.

Before replacing a cartridge that has started printing faintly, take it out and rock it slowly from end to end a few times, then put it back. Toner settles unevenly and that alone often buys another few hundred pages, which is worth knowing on a cartridge at this price. Faint print that returns quickly after the shake means the cartridge really is done. Vertical white lines in the same place on every page usually mean a scratch or a worn strip on the drum, which on this design is another way of saying a new cartridge is due.

Availability deserves a line as well. Only one other machine we list shares the CE278A, neither host is newer than 2010, and sixteen years is deep into the retired band of our supply index. Toner blunts the risk. A sealed cartridge is dry powder and keeps for years, so buying a spare ahead is safe in a way it never is with ink. Treat this as context rather than a warning.
