Which ink does the Epson Expression Premium XP-7100 use?

The Expression Premium XP-7100 is fed from the Epson 410 range, with black, cyan, magenta and yellow supplied as separate cartridges rather than one combined colour unit. Each of those comes in a standard 410 and a high yield 410XL.

Going XL on the black barely pays on this model. The 410XL black is rated at 500 pages for $28.59 and the standard 410 black at 250 pages for $15.39, which is 5.72c against 6.16c, a saving of about 7 percent for 86 percent more at the till. The colours are a different answer entirely: a 410XL colour is rated at 650 pages for $21.99, or 3.38c a page, against 5.13c for the standard 410 colour at 300 pages, which is about 34 percent off. Buy the XL colours and think twice about the XL black. That also leaves black text costing more per page here than any single colour does.

Compatible and remanufactured 410 cartridges are a real option on the XP-7100, with a condition. Epson's guide for this model carries its full firmware warning, so a cartridge printing happily today can be refused after the printer updates itself. Epson will show a non-genuine ink notice the first time one goes in, which you can dismiss and carry on. Ink level reporting is the thing that usually stops working properly with third-party chips, so treat the on-screen gauge as a rough guide once you have moved off Epson cartridges, and keep a spare for the colour you use most.

A photo printer that prints a batch of pictures and then sits idle for a month is the pattern that causes trouble here. The head is fixed in the printer rather than built into the cartridge, and the colour nozzles are the ones that dry first. If a print comes back with a colour cast or a missing shade, print the nozzle check pattern before you replace anything. A gap in one colour block points at a clogged nozzle rather than an empty tank, and a cleaning cycle costs nothing while a 410XL colour costs $21.99.
