Which ink does the Epson Expression Home XP-4200 use?

The Expression Home XP-4200 takes four separate Epson 232 cartridges, black, cyan, magenta and yellow, each also sold as a 232XL. Separate tanks mean an empty magenta costs you a magenta and nothing else, which is where this printer pulls ahead of the tri-color machines sold alongside it.

The XL decision only exists on the black here. A 232XL black is rated 380 pages for $36.99, so 9.73c, against 150 pages for $22.99 on the standard 232, or 15.33c. That is about 36 percent off. Epson sells no 232XL in the colours, so each colour is fixed at 140 pages for $9.29, or 6.64c, whatever you do. A restock with the XL black and standard colours is $64.86 against $50.86 all standard.

Black is the expensive side on this printer even after the XL upgrade. A 232XL black page costs 9.73c where each colour costs 6.64c, so switching a document to greyscale to save money does not work here. It is a cheap machine with dear ink, and the colour slot having no larger size is the part that pins it there.

Compatible and remanufactured Epson 232 cartridges fit and print, and four separate tanks is where a compatible set repays most. The condition is the firmware. Epson's own guide for this model says non-Epson cartridges that worked before an update may not continue to work after one, so turn automatic updates off before you buy a stack. Buy from a seller who guarantees chip recognition and takes returns, since a chip the printer refuses to read is the one failure mode worth planning for.

Two habits keep this machine out of trouble. Swap cartridges with the printer switched on and let the ink charging routine finish before you touch anything, because interrupting it wastes a measurable slice of a new cartridge. And print something in colour every week or so, even a single page. Epson printheads are built into the printer rather than the cartridge, so a head that dries out is a repair rather than a purchase, and cleaning cycles that clear it are drawing on ink you have already paid for. If a colour drops out, run a nozzle check first and change nothing until you have seen the pattern.

Switching that automatic check off is a documented setting rather than a workaround. Epson's own instructions have you right click the product icon in the Windows taskbar, open Auto Update Settings, set the Check every menu to Never, then Apply and OK. The switch only covers what the printer software does on its own. An update you start yourself from the Epson Software Updater, or download from Epson's support site, installs regardless, so the habit while you are running compatibles is to leave both alone. Epson's own note adds that anyone who turns the automatic check off should look at its support site for updates now and then, which is worth weighing against the reason you turned it off.
