Which ink/toner does the Brother DCP-7065DN use?

The Brother DCP-7065DN is a mono laser, so it runs on toner rather than ink, and it has two consumables rather than one. A TN toner cartridge holds the powder. A DR-420 drum unit carries the image onto the paper and outlives several toners before it needs replacing. The two are easy to confuse when you are ordering in a hurry.

On toner the high yield is the obvious pick. The TN-450 is rated at 2600 pages for $58.00, which is 2.23 cents a page, and the TN-420 gives 1200 pages for $45.00, or 3.75 cents. That makes the smaller cartridge about 41 percent more expensive per page for no benefit beyond a lower price on the day.

The drum belongs in the arithmetic as well. At $104.99 for 12000 pages it adds 0.87 cents to every page, so with a TN-450 fitted a page costs about 3.11 cents in consumables. One drum sees out between four and five TN-450 loads, which is why a drum warning arriving alongside a toner warning is normal rather than a sign that something is wrong.

Brother imposes no firmware lockout here, and both TN-420 and TN-450 work in third party form. What the machine does instead is count pages rather than measure powder, so a refilled or compatible cartridge that is physically full can still report itself empty. The toner counter has a reset sequence on the control panel, and the drum has a separate one that you run when the DR-420 is actually replaced. Running the drum reset because the toner ran out is a good way to lose track of where the drum really is.

Print quality tells you which part is failing. Text that fades gradually, or fades on one side of the page, is toner, and taking the cartridge out and rocking it gently side to side usually buys a few more days. Marks or smudges that repeat at the same interval down every page are the drum, and no amount of new toner will clear them.
