HP 58X is the high yield black toner for the same four printers as the 58A: the LaserJet Pro M404dn and M404dw, and the LaserJet Pro MFP M428fdn and M428fdw. Same fit, same shell, more toner inside.

If the printer gets used, the case for it is straightforward. 10000 rated pages at $178.99 is 1.79c a page against 3.17c on the 58A, so you pay about $84.00 more once and print more than three times as many pages before buying again. On a machine doing a few hundred pages a month that difference is back inside the first cartridge.

Buy price is why people hesitate, and there is a second reason to think about. A firmware block costs more when it strands a bigger cartridge. The HP data sheet covering the M404 series carries the dynamic security notice, so a compatible 58X can be refused after an update that installs on its own overnight. If you intend to run compatibles here, set firmware updates to do not check first, buy one cartridge at a time rather than a multipack, and look at remanufactured cartridges built on reused original HP chips, which the wording of HP's own notice allows.

Because the drum on these printers is a separate part, a fresh 58X fixes nothing that the drum was causing. Check the shipping seal is fully out and the cartridge has clicked home before blaming the toner for a bad page, and save the drum verdict for a defect that repeats at the same interval on every sheet. HP also warns that its cartridges are sold for use in a designated region and will not work outside it, so a cheap 58X from another market can be genuine and still be rejected.
