W2020X is the high yield black in the 414X set, for the Color LaserJet Pro M454dw and the MFP M479fdw. At 7500 rated pages for $165.00 it prints a black page for 2.20c, which is the cheapest colour laser black in our catalogue.
The comparison with the standard W2020A is stark: 2.20c against 3.75c, a difference of 1.55c on every page. The larger cartridge costs $75.00 more, so it has paid for that difference after roughly 4800 pages and then keeps saving for the remainder of its rated life. Even a lightly used workgroup printer gets there inside one cartridge.
This is the number that justifies owning one of these machines. A colour laser that prints black text at 2.20c is competitive with mono lasers that cannot print colour at all, and it is why the M454dw and M479fdw keep turning up in offices that considered a cheaper printer first.
The catch is HP's dynamic security notice, published across the M454 and M479 series, which means the printer is intended to work only with cartridges that have a new or reused HP chip. A firmware update can refuse a compatible W2020X, and on a cartridge this size that is an expensive thing to be sitting on. Set firmware updates to do not check before the first third party cartridge, and buy remanufactured stock built on reused original HP chips, which HP's own wording permits. Our firmware lockout tracker lists both printers.
