Epson 212 black · standard

The Epson 212 black is the standard capacity black cartridge for three compact Epson all-in-ones: the Expression Home XP-4100, the WorkForce WF-2830 and the WorkForce WF-2850. Colours are separate 212 cartridges on all three, so the black is a part you replace on its own.

It is the expensive way to buy black ink for these printers. The standard 212 black is rated at about 175 pages and lists near $13, which is roughly 7.43 cents a page. The 212XL black is rated at about 500 pages for around $18, or about 3.6 cents, so the bigger cartridge costs a few dollars more and delivers black text for less than half the price per page. Buy the standard size only if you print so seldom that a cartridge would sit open for a year.

None of these three printers carry a firmware lock, so compatible and remanufactured 212 blacks are a genuine option and Epson's non-genuine ink notice is a warning you dismiss rather than a block. What varies between sellers is the chip, which is what reports ink level, so pick one that states current chip compatibility instead of the cheapest listing.

If a new 212 black is not recognised, the usual cause is mechanical. Take it out, check you have peeled the yellow tape off the vent on top, wipe the copper contacts with a dry lint-free cloth and push it back until it clicks. Cleaning cycles are worth being careful with on this size of printer. The XP-4100, the WF-2830 and the WF-2850 have no replaceable maintenance box, and the ink spent on cleaning goes into pads inside the chassis that you cannot swap out, so run the nozzle check first and clean only the channel that shows gaps.
